| Obverse description | Dark green intaglio print on cream paper, centred by a large portrait vignette of a man in profile facing right with long hair, framed within an oval. The 1935 Costa Rican 50 Céntimos belongs to a transitional period when the Banco Internacional de Costa Rica was still handling circulation currency under the República imprint — the central bank as a fully independent institution didn't solidify until the Banco Central de Costa Rica was established in 1950. ABNC held the contract for Costa Rican notes through much of this period, and their New York presses produced the entire small-denomination series to which this belongs.
The 50 céntimos denomination saw heavy everyday use and survivors in any collectible grade are considerably scarcer than the higher values from the same series.
