The Gambia's 1990s commemorative silver program was largely produced for the international collector market rather than domestic circulation, with pieces contracted through foreign minting houses and distributed almost exclusively through numismatic channels. The country's actual monetary economy relied heavily on small-denomination cupro-nickel coinage; these silver issues were effectively never intended to cross a Gambian market stall.
