The Banco Nacional de Bolivia was established in 1871 as a private commercial institution and held note-issuing privileges during a period when Bolivia had no central bank. The 1883 date places this note squarely within the post-War of the Pacific years — Bolivia had lost its coastal territory to Chile in 1879 and signed the truce in 1884, leaving the country landlocked and its economy under considerable strain.
American Bank Note Company produced the entire series from its New York facilities, as was common for Latin American issuers who lacked domestic intaglio capacity. ABNC's work for Bolivian institutions in this period is well documented in their archived contract records.
