50 Bolivianos Banco Industrial de La Paz

The Banco Industrial de La Paz was one of several Bolivian provincial banks of issue operating before the 1911 nationalization that consolidated note-issuing authority under the Banco de la Nación Boliviana. American Bank Note Company handled the printing for a number of these institutions simultaneously, which means the engraving quality on this note is considerably higher than its provincial origin might suggest.

By 1900, Bolivia's banking sector was still fragmented across regional institutions with overlapping and sometimes competing circulation zones. Notes from La Paz-based banks circulated most heavily in the altiplano and toward the Chilean border — territory whose economic geography had been dramatically reshaped by the loss of coastal access in the War of the Pacific two decades earlier.
