Banco Industrial de La Paz was a regional commercial issuer operating under Bolivia's free banking period, when private banks held the legal right to issue their own currency — a system that collapsed definitively after 1914 when the Banco de la Nación Boliviana took over the monopoly. This note dates from the early peak of that era, when La Paz-based institutions competed directly with banks in Sucre and Cochabamba for commercial dominance in the altiplano trade economy.
The American Bank Note Company contract for this series gave the notes a production quality well above what most regional South American issuers could source domestically. ABNC's intaglio work on Bolivian private bank paper from this period is generally crisp, though humidity damage along fold lines is a known issue with surviving examples from this region.
