Obverse description An intaglio portrait of Emperor Haile Selassie I in military uniform is positioned at right, set against a multicolour guilloche underprint. The left and centre are occupied by an engraved vignette of the arch bridge over the Blue Nile. Denomination numerals '50' appear in each upper corner, with bilingual Amharic and English inscriptions across the upper portion, the issuer title 'STATE BANK OF ETHIOPIA' along the lower margin, and an ornate foliate engraved border framing the entire face.

Reverse description A central oval intaglio vignette presents the crowned Lion of Judah couchant, the imperial emblem of Ethiopia, holding a cross-topped standard; the vignette is flanked by large multicolour guilloche rosettes at left and right. Denomination numerals '50' appear in the upper corners, and an Amharic inscription is contained within a ruled panel at the base of the central vignette. A repeating text band reading 'STATE BANK OF ETHIOPIA' runs along the upper border, the whole enclosed within an engraved decorative frame.
