This 2019 issue is part of Romania's ongoing circulating commemorative program marking the centenary of the Great Union of 1918, when Transylvania, Wallachia, and Moldavia were unified under Romanian sovereignty following the collapse of Austria-Hungary. Ferdinand I was the ruling monarch at that moment — it was his government that signed the unification decrees, and he was subsequently crowned King of All Romanians at Alba Iulia in 1922 in a ceremony deliberately staged at the historic Transylvanian city. The National Bank of Romania rolled out this centenary coin series across multiple denominations over several years rather than in a single release.
