Romania's bani-denomination coins were effectively demonetized in practical terms long before they were officially withdrawn — by the late 2010s, prices were routinely rounded to the nearest leu at the point of sale, and the 50 bani piece was the sole surviving sub-leu coin still in regular production. Its persistence owes more to vending machine calibration and transit fare structures than to any organic demand in retail circulation.
