The first note issued by the Bank of Thailand under Rama X (King Vajiralongkorn), who ascended to the throne in December 2016 following the death of his father Bhumibol Adulyadej. Thailand had used Rama IX's portrait on its currency for decades, making this series the first wholesale royal transition in banknote design in a generation. The 50 Baht denomination was among the initial releases of the new Rama X series in 2018, printed entirely in-house at the Note Printing Works in Bangkok — a facility the Bank of Thailand has operated under its own management since 1969.
