Additional information

Y#500 was issued to mark the sixtieth anniversary of Bhumibol Adulyadej's accession to the throne — the longest reign of any monarch in Thai history at the time of striking. Bhumibol had ascended in 1946 under circumstances that remain officially unresolved: his elder brother, King Ananda Mahidol, was found dead from a gunshot wound in the Grand Palace, and no conclusive verdict was ever publicly established.

Copper-nickel commemoratives of this type circulated only briefly before being pulled from active use by collectors.
