Comments

Argentine provinces have periodically issued their own quasi-currency during federal fiscal crises, and Tucumán's austral-denominated notes from 1986–87 fall squarely into that tradition. The national austral itself had only been introduced in June 1985 as part of the Austral Plan — an emergency stabilization program under Alfonsín — so Tucumán was issuing provincial paper denominated in a currency that was barely a year old and already under inflationary pressure.

These notes functioned as bonds redeemable for national currency, used to pay provincial employees when federal transfers ran short. Two catalog references (Colantonio 116 and 117) suggest a signature or series variant within the issue.
