Obverse description Central field displays the denomination numeral '50' in large characters, with the word 'ariary' inscribed immediately above it in smaller lettering. A five-pointed star surmounts the denomination at the top of the inner design. The entire denomination device is flanked by a three-quarter wreath of stylized grain and foliage, open at the base where a small circular ornament serves as a terminal. The date appears below the wreath at the bottom of the field. The peripheral legend 'REPOBLIKAN'I MADAGASIKARA' curves along the upper rim.

Additional information

Madagascar's ariary coinage is notable for denominating in a unit that had already existed as a conceptual subdivision long before decimalization — the ariary predates the franc as a reference point in local trade, with roots in 19th-century Merina Kingdom exchange. The "motto D" designation distinguishes this from earlier reverse varieties in the KM#32 series, a distinction that matters to type collectors but is rarely flagged at point of sale.
