50 Apsars Vladislav Ardzinba

Vladislav Ardzinba led Abkhazia through its brutal 1992–93 war with Georgia and became the republic's first president — a figure so central to the separatist project that commemorating him in gold was an inevitability. The Bank of Abkhazia, operating in a state recognized by fewer than a handful of UN members, issues coins that function more as political assertions than circulating currency. Russia recognized Abkhazian independence in August 2008, following the South Ossetia war, which gave the republic's institutions — including its mint program — a degree of geopolitical cover they had previously lacked.
