| 表面の銘文 | BANKI NKURU Y`U RWANDA REPUBLIKA Y`U RWANDA UBUMWI - UMURIMO - GUKUNDA IGIHUGU AMAFARANGA 50 MIRONGO ITANU (Translation: Central Bank of Rwanda. Republic of Rwanda. Unity work patriotism. Fifty francs.) |
| 裏面の説明 | Three meerkats (Suricata suricatta) rendered in high relief are depicted in the lower left portion of the field, shown in characteristic upright sentinel postures. An outline map of the African continent occupies the right side of the field. The ruthenium-plated silver surface provides a dark contrasting background, with selective gilding accentuating design elements. The legend AFRICAN OUNCE arcs along the upper periphery, with the date 2016 and the specification 1oz FINE SILVER 999 inscribed in the field. |

Rwanda's National Bank has issued a consistent run of wildlife-themed silver coins since the mid-2000s, largely targeting the collector market rather than circulation. The meerkat — marketed here under its Afrikaans name — is not native to Rwanda, which makes this an unapologetically commercial issue rather than a numismatic document of national fauna.
Ruthenium plating over fine silver is relatively rare in mint-issued coinage; the element, a platinum-group metal first isolated in 1844, produces a darker, graphite-like surface that contrasts sharply with selective gilding.
