Rwanda has no native meerkat population — the suricate is endemic to the arid regions of southern Africa, thousands of kilometers away. This coin belongs to a broader series issued under Rwanda's unusually permissive commemorative licensing arrangements, which have made the National Bank a favored vehicle for European bullion dealers seeking a sovereign issuer for wildlife-themed collector pieces. The actual commercial and design work originates well outside Kigali.
