Obverse description The national coat of arms of Rwanda is depicted centrally within a raised inner circle, showing the traditional Rwandan basket, a sun, a shield with a knot motif, a sorghum plant, and a coffee branch, all above a banner inscribed with the national motto. The legend BANKI NKURU Y'U RWANDA arcs along the upper periphery in large Latin characters. The denomination AMAFARANGA 50 MIRONGO ITANU appears along the lower portion of the field, with the numeral 50 rendered prominently at the bottom centre.

Additional information

The Santa María was Columbus's flagship on the 1492 voyage, though she never made the return crossing — she ran aground off the coast of present-day Haiti on Christmas Day and was dismantled, her timber used to construct the settlement of La Navidad. Rwanda's inclusion of this subject follows a well-worn path of small-nation commemorative programs targeting European collector markets, where Age of Exploration themes reliably sell.
