Rwanda has no native pelican population. The choice of the great white pelican for this issue reflects the broader African wildlife bullion market rather than any particular ecological or national connection — Rwanda's own fauna, including mountain gorillas and golden monkeys, goes largely unminted in favor of species with stronger international collector appeal.
