Rwanda has no native okapi population — the species is endemic to the Democratic Republic of Congo's Ituri rainforest, roughly 1,500 kilometers west. Rwandan wildlife-themed bullion issues have long targeted the international collector market rather than domestic circulation, a commercial strategy the National Bank formalized through a series of contracts with European minting and distribution firms.
