This series spans one of the most destructive periods in Afghan monetary history — from the Saur Revolution's aftermath through the Soviet occupation and into the civil war that followed withdrawal. Goznak, the Soviet state security printer, supplied Afghanistan's banknotes throughout this period, a logistical arrangement that reflected the depth of Soviet political and economic involvement in Kabul far more plainly than any diplomatic communiqué.
P#57 ran across multiple years with no substantive design changes, making precise dating of individual notes difficult without reference to signature combinations, which changed as successive finance ministers and bank governors were appointed — and occasionally removed — by force.
