The 1998 Mongolian lunar gold series was produced for the international collector market at a moment when Mongolia's post-Soviet economy was still finding its footing — the national currency had undergone severe devaluation through the early 1990s, making a 50,000 tögrög face value essentially nominal against the coin's bullion content. At 155.52 grams of .9999 fine gold, the denomination bore no relationship to any practical transaction.
Struck to five-ounce specifications, this issue was almost certainly produced by a European contract mint rather than domestic facilities.
