Reverse description A finely detailed depiction of a prowling tiger rendered in the traditional East Asian artistic style, shown in three-quarter view crouching low over rocky ground with its head turned toward the viewer, conveying power and alertness. Pine branches appear in the upper right field and bamboo stalks at the lower right, evoking a classic Chinese lunar iconographic setting. The Chinese characters for 'Year of the Tiger' (虎年) appear in the upper left field alongside additional Mongolian script characters. The date '1998' is inscribed at the left, and the denomination '50000 TUGRIKS' is prominently displayed in two lines at the lower right of the field.

Additional information

The 1998 Mongolian lunar gold series was produced for the international collector market at a moment when Mongolia's post-Soviet economy was still finding its footing — the national currency had undergone severe devaluation through the early 1990s, making a 50,000 tögrög face value essentially nominal against the coin's bullion content. At 155.52 grams of .9999 fine gold, the denomination bore no relationship to any practical transaction.

Struck to five-ounce specifications, this issue was almost certainly produced by a European contract mint rather than domestic facilities.
