Part of Mongolia's Chinese zodiac bullion series, this kilo-equivalent gold piece was issued the same year Mongolia was navigating the turbulent aftermath of its 1990 transition from Soviet-aligned single-party rule to multiparty democracy — a period when hard-currency reserves were thin and prestige bullion issues were partly a mechanism for attracting foreign exchange. The mintage was extremely low, and most examples were absorbed by specialist collectors rather than circulating in any practical sense.
