Uzbekistan's central bank moved to higher denominations through the 2010s and 2020s largely as a consequence of the country's prolonged inflation history — the som was redenominated in 1994 at 1,000 old roubles to one new som, but purchasing power erosion continued steadily, making large-denomination notes a practical necessity rather than a policy statement. By 2021, a 50,000-som note represented roughly $4.50 USD at prevailing exchange rates.
Cotton substrate is the expected choice for Uzbekistan given its position as one of the world's major cotton producers, though the actual paper production and security printing for this series was handled externally.
