Obverse description The Tanzanian national coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting a quartered shield supported by two human figures — a man to the left and a woman to the right — each grasping one of two crossed elephant tusks that frame the shield. The shield bears a torch, crossed spear and axe, and wavy lines representing the sea. A scrolled ribbon at the base carries the national motto 'UHURU NA UMOJA' (Freedom and Unity). The legend 'TANZANIA' arcs along the upper periphery in large spaced letters, and the date '1998' appears in the lower field below the supporters.

Additional information

Tanzania issued this piece as part of a broader run of high-denomination wildlife bullion and collector issues produced through the 1990s, a period when several East African nations worked with European minting houses — primarily in Germany and Austria — to produce large-format gold pieces aimed squarely at the collector and investor market rather than any domestic circulation purpose. The Serengeti branding was commercially deliberate, timed to capitalize on growing international ecotourism interest in the Ngorongoro and Serengeti ecosystems following UNESCO's expanded engagement with the region.

At five troy ounces of .999 fine gold, pieces of this specification were almost never handled by ordinary Tanzanian citizens. The face value is purely nominal.
