Bank Indonesia introduced a revised paper series in 2022 alongside its ongoing polymer rollout — an unusual parallel strategy for a central bank of this size, maintaining two substrate types in active circulation simultaneously. The 50,000 Rupiah denomination sits at the upper end of everyday transaction notes, heavy enough in face value to warrant the more involved security specification but still paper rather than polymer.
