Bradbury Wilkinson produced this note for Banco Nacional Ultramarino at a moment when the bank was juggling colonial currency obligations across Portuguese Africa, Asia, and the Pacific simultaneously. The 50,000 Réis denomination placed this firmly at the high end of circulation — not a note that saw daily commerce.
The Réis-based monetary system was already living on borrowed time. Portugal decimalized in 1911, replacing the Réis with the Escudo at 1,000 Réis to the Escudo, which made 50,000 Réis notes like this one obsolete within two years of issue.
