| Obverse description | Central to the obverse is a detailed depiction of a 15th-century Portuguese caravel under full sail, presented in high relief against a mirror-polished field, with stylised waves rendered in the lower exergue. The vessel is shown in three-quarter view, with rigging, masts, and pennants faithfully rendered, commemorating the 1456 West African voyage of the Venetian explorer Alvise da Cadamosto in service of Prince Henry the Navigator. The circular legend along the upper rim reads REPÚBLICA DA GUINÉ-BISSAU, with the national motto UNIDADE LUTA PROGRESSO and the date 1996 completing the inscription. |
