The snow leopard (Panthera uncia) was listed as endangered by the IUCN throughout the 1990s, and Bhutan's high-altitude terrain in the Himalayas represents one of the animal's last viable habitats. This coin was issued the same year Bhutan was formalizing its environmental policies under the fourth Druk Gyalpo, a reign defined in part by constitutional commitments to maintaining forest cover above sixty percent of national territory.
