Reverse description The reverse retains the original 5 Mark Notgeld design of the Stadt Aschaffenburg issue, printed in dark brown on cream paper. The heading 'Stadt Aschaffenburg' is rendered in Gothic blackletter script across the top, with the denomination 'Fünf Mark' in large decorative Gothic lettering occupying the centre. A circular vignette seal at centre displays a robed figure before a Gothic archway with the legend 'ASCHAFFENBURG STADT' around the border. The four corners each bear the numeral '5' within ornate guilloche rosettes, and a red serial number is printed at the top. A multi-line payment clause in Gothic script appears at the foot, signed 'Stadtmagistrat:'.

Comments

One of thousands of Notgeld overstamp issues produced across Germany during the hyperinflation of 1923, when municipal authorities were legally empowered — and practically forced — to create emergency denominations far beyond what any printer had anticipated when the base notes were designed. The 5 Mark plate became raw material, its face value rendered arithmetically absurd within weeks of printing.

Aschaffenburg's city council issued this through local administrative channels rather than a banking institution. The overstamp mechanism was the fastest available tool when the Reichsbank could not supply currency fast enough to match depreciation.
