50 000 Lire Leonardo

The 50,000 Lire denomination was the highest value note in Italian circulation when this series entered production, a reflection of the inflationary pressure that had been grinding through the Italian economy since the postwar reconstruction years. By the time the last dates in this issue were being signed off in the early 1970s, the face value — once genuinely large — had already begun its long slide toward insignificance.

Mario Baiardi and Trento Cionini were both staff engravers at the Officina Carte Valori, the Banca d'Italia's in-house security printing facility. All production stayed entirely domestic, unusual for a high-denomination note of this period when many European central banks still contracted abroad. The watermark is a continuous-thread type embedded during papermaking rather than applied after the fact.
