The second-type 50,000 Lire Bernini was introduced in 1992 with upgraded security features as counterfeit pressure on high-denomination Italian notes intensified in the late 1980s. The principal change from the first type was the addition of a metallic security thread, a modification driven by specific documented forgery problems rather than routine revision cycles.
Zannotti's intaglio work on this series is among the finer examples of the Officina Carta Valori's output in the final decade before euro conversion. The series remained valid until February 2002, when all lire-denominated notes lost legal tender status — after which redemption was possible only directly through the Banca d'Italia, a right that technically persists until 2012 under Italian law.
