Opmerkingen

Romania's hyperinflationary spiral of the 1990s forced successive redenominations and escalating face values — by 2000, a 50,000 Lei note was worth roughly $2 USD. The denomination existed purely because the alternative was printing even larger stacks of lower-value notes for ordinary transactions.

P#109A belongs to the late paper series before Romania's transition to polymer, which began with the 2001 issues. The security specification on this series was notably thin for the denomination — watermark and thread only, at a time when counterfeiting pressure on high-face-value Lei notes was a documented concern for the BNR.
