Saint Matrona of Moscow — born blind in 1885 in the Tula region — became one of the Russian Orthodox Church's most venerated modern saints, officially canonized only in 1999. The Lao PDR's issuance of a coin in her honor reflects the broader market for orthodox-themed silver bullion struck by sovereign mints and issuing authorities with no direct cultural connection to the subject, a practice that accelerated sharply after 2010 as collector demand outpaced the supply of topically relevant issuers.
