| 背面描述 | A detailed architectural rendering of the Church of the Holy Cross (Surb Khach) on Aghtamar Island occupies the central field, depicted in three-quarter perspective showing the characteristic conical drum and dome above a rectangular nave with carved blind arcading. The dates '301–2001' appear to the left of the church, referencing the 1700th anniversary of Armenia's adoption of Christianity. A border of evenly spaced raised dots frames the design. The circular legend in Armenian script 'ՔՐԻՍՏՈՆԵԱՅ ՀԱՅԱՍՏԱՆ' (Christian Armenia) runs along the upper periphery, with 'AKHTAMAR' in Latin script at the right. The numeral '1700' and 'CHRISTIAN ARMENIA' appear in the lower field. |

Issued in anticipation of the 1700th anniversary of Armenia's adoption of Christianity, a milestone reached in 2001 — making this 1999 coin part of a multi-year commemorative program launched well ahead of the occasion. Armenia's claim to being the first nation to adopt Christianity as a state religion, attributed to the baptism of King Tiridates III under Gregory the Illuminator in 301 AD, is one the Armenian Church has defended vigorously against competing historical interpretations from neighboring Georgia.
