Venezuela's hyperinflationary collapse — the worst in Latin American history outside wartime — forced repeated redenominations that made this note obsolete almost immediately after issue. The 50,000 bolívar soberano denomination was rendered effectively worthless within months; by mid-2019, a single US dollar exchanged for tens of thousands of bolívares soberanos, meaning this note barely covered a bus fare.
Printed domestically at Maracay rather than contracted abroad, the note reflects the Maduro government's insistence on keeping production in-country even as the economy — and the currency itself — disintegrated around it.
