Argentina's hyperinflationary collapse of 1989–1990 pushed several provinces to issue their own quasi-currencies, known as bonos or títulos, when the federal government could no longer supply sufficient circulating money. Tucumán's australes notes were among these emergency instruments — provincial obligations that functioned as currency by necessity, accepted in local commerce because there was often nothing else available.

The 50,000-australe denomination underscores how rapidly the national unit had deteriorated. The federal austral itself was replaced by the peso convertible in 1992, rendering all provincial issues of this type effectively worthless shortly after.
