Krupp's wartime-era industrial empire had mutated by 1923 into something stranger: a private company printing its own emergency currency to pay wages because Reichsbank notes couldn't keep pace with hyperinflation. The Fried. Krupp Aktiengesellschaft issued this Notgeld not as a novelty but out of operational necessity — the firm employed tens of thousands of workers in Essen, and payroll could not wait for official currency to catch up with prices that were doubling weekly.
The fifty-million-mark denomination reflects a specific window in the inflation spiral, roughly mid-1923, before denominations climbed into the billions and trillions within months. Krupp's notgeld was generally accepted locally, backed by nothing more than the company's industrial standing.
