Kreis Wetzlar was a rural district in Hesse-Nassau, and like hundreds of German municipalities in the summer and autumn of 1923, its county treasury was forced to issue its own emergency currency when Reichsbank notes became worthless faster than they could be printed and distributed. This particular denomination — fifty million marks — reflects where the hyperinflation stood in late 1923, when values were climbing by orders of magnitude week to week.
Scharfes Druckereien was a local Wetzlar press, not a specialist banknote printer. That matters: the production quality on district-level Notgeld from this period varies considerably, and notes from small commercial printers often show inconsistent ink coverage and rough perforations.
