Kreis Alzey was one of hundreds of German district administrations forced to print emergency currency during the hyperinflation of 1923, when the Reichsbank simply could not supply enough physical notes to keep pace with collapsing purchasing power. By the time denominations reached fifty million Mark, the figure had become almost meaningless — the Reichsmark reform arrived in November 1923, and most of this Notgeld was redeemed almost immediately or simply discarded.
District-issued notes from the Rheinhessen region at this scale are common in bulk lots but rarely found individually catalogued with clean provenance.
