The Handelskammer für die Provinz Birkenfeld was an unusual issuing authority even by the chaotic standards of German hyperinflation notgeld. Birkenfeld was a Prussian exclave — geographically separated from the main Prussian territory and surrounded by the Rhine Province — which gave its chamber of commerce a degree of administrative independence that translated directly into local emergency currency issuance during 1923.
Fifty million marks sounds staggering until you remember that by late 1923 this denomination was functionally petty cash. Notes like this were often printed on one side only to cut production costs as the inflation outpaced the presses.
