Hagen was among the Ruhr industrial centers that found themselves printing emergency money at scales that would have been unimaginable two years earlier. This note was issued during the hyperinflation peak of 1923, when the Reichsbank's supply of officially printed currency simply could not keep pace with the daily devaluation — municipal and district authorities across the Rhineland and Westphalia were legally permitted to issue their own Notgeld to meet payroll and basic commercial transactions.
Fifty million marks. By late October 1923, that sum would not reliably buy a loaf of bread.
