Obverse description The obverse is printed in dark blue-black letterpress on a pale ochre-brown wavy-line guilloche underprint. The large numeral '50' appears as a pale underprint vignette in the upper centre, overprinted in Gothic blackletter script with the denomination 'Millionen Mark'. A serial number in sans-serif type is positioned in the upper left field. The lower half carries a multi-line redemption text in Gothic script naming the municipal and district treasuries of Dortmund and Hörde, the place and date 'Dortmund, am 21. September 1923', the issuing authority 'Für die Stadt- und Landkreise Dortmund und Hörde: Der Magistrat der Stadt Dortmund', and two manuscript signatures. A circular eagle vignette of the Weimar Republic arms appears at lower left, while vertical marginal legends in small type run along both the left and right edges.

Dortmund's municipal administration issued notgeld on this scale because the Reichsbank simply could not print fast enough. By late 1923, the hyperinflation had advanced to the point where cities, counties, and even private firms were authorized — sometimes just tacitly permitted — to produce emergency currency to meet payroll. The joint issuance covering both the Stadt- and Landkreis Dortmund and the Landkreis Hörde reflects a practical administrative merger of convenience, not any formal political reorganization.

Fifty million marks purchased roughly a loaf of bread at the time of printing. Within weeks of issue, the denomination was obsolete.
