Schweinfurt's 50-million-Mark emergency note belongs to the most extreme phase of Weimar hyperinflation — by late 1923, municipal and commercial entities across Germany were printing their own Notgeld simply because the Reichsbank could not supply currency fast enough to keep pace with daily price collapses. H. Stürtz in Würzburg was a logical choice for a Bavarian city of Schweinfurt's size: a capable academic press able to turn around large denominations on short notice.

The signature of Dr. Wurkle as Erster Bürgermeister gives the note its legal authorization under emergency municipal powers invoked that year. Within weeks of issue, the denomination itself was obsolete — the Rentenmark reform of November 1923 rendered all Mark-denominated Notgeld worthless overnight.
