Zweibrücken's 50-million Mark note dates from the absolute peak of the Weimar hyperinflation spiral — by late 1923, denominations like this were obsolete within days of issue. Municipal authorities across Germany were legally permitted to print their own emergency currency, known as Notgeld, to compensate for a central bank simply unable to supply notes fast enough for daily transactions.
The official stamp served as the primary authentication mechanism, since local printers lacked the equipment or time for anything more sophisticated. Zweibrücken, a mid-sized city in the Rhenish Palatinate then under French occupation, had additional logistical pressures that complicated even basic commerce.
