Germany's national railway administration — the Reichsbahn — was among dozens of non-banking entities granted emergency issuing authority during the hyperinflation of 1923, when the Reichsbank simply could not print and distribute currency fast enough to meet demand. The Stuttgart regional directorate issued this note on its own authority, valid only within its operational district. These Eisenbahngeld issues circulated among railway workers as wage payments first, then filtered into wider local commerce.
Fifty billion marks. By the time notes of this denomination were necessary, the figure had become arithmetically routine.
