The Hannoversche Maschinenbau-AG — better known as Hanomag — was a locomotive and heavy machinery manufacturer, not a bank. It issued this note under the emergency currency provisions of the 1923 hyperinflation, when the Reichsbank could not print fast enough to meet demand and private employers were legally permitted to issue their own Notgeld to cover payroll. By the time denominations reached fifty billion Mark, the notes were often worth less than the paper they were printed on before workers could spend them.

Hanomag printed on its own premises in Linden, a district west of Hannover absorbed into the city in 1920.
