The Bayerische Staatsbank's billion-mark note was overtaken by inflation so rapidly that overprinting became the only practical response — restamping existing stock with a 50,000,000,000 mark face value was faster than commissioning new print runs. By late 1923 the Reichsbank and regional institutions alike were routinely overprinting rather than printing, a logistical concession to an exchange rate that was moving faster than ink could dry.
Bavaria's state bank operated with some autonomy from Berlin during this period, issuing emergency currency under its own authority. The overprint series reflects that — Munich was managing its own monetary crisis on its own timeline.
