Eschweiler and Stolberg were neighboring industrial towns in the Rhineland, both heavily tied to coal mining and metalworking — and both, like hundreds of German municipalities in late 1923, were forced to print their own emergency money when the Reichsbank simply could not supply currency fast enough to keep pace with hyperinflation. This 50 Milliarden Mark note is a joint issue, which was unusual; most Notgeld was issued by a single municipality or employer. The administrative decision to combine two separate civic authorities onto one instrument likely reflects the logistical strain of that autumn.
By November 1923, when the Rentenmark stabilization finally occurred, notes like this one were being issued and rendered worthless within days of printing.
