Brzeg's Renaissance town hall is one of the finest civic buildings in Silesia, constructed in the mid-sixteenth century under the Piast dukes of Legnica-Brzeg — a dynasty that made the city a genuine center of Central European Renaissance culture before dying out in 1675 and surrendering the duchy to Habsburg control. The building survived Prussian rule, two world wars, and decades of postwar neglect under the PRL, when maintenance of German-associated architectural heritage in the Recovered Territories was politically complicated at best.
