The Żuraw — Gdańsk's medieval crane — was the largest port crane in the medieval world when completed in the mid-15th century, capable of lifting loads up to 4,000 kilograms and hoisting ships' masts into place. It also functioned as a city gate, straddling the Motława riverbank, which made it simultaneously a piece of industrial infrastructure and a fortification. The building survived the Second World War largely intact, a rare distinction for Gdańsk, which was roughly 90% destroyed in 1945.
